Daniels receives the Lindy-Callahan Scholar-Athlete Award


Greenwood High School senior Kamron Daniels was surrounded by family, friends and supporters as he accepted the Lindy-Callahan Scholar Athlete Award at the 21st annual banquet held April 4 at the Hilton Jackson in Jackson, MS.


Kamron, GHS’s STAR student was one of 16 scholar-athletes from across the state who were honored at the banquet. Kamron represents Region 3. The scholar-athletes received a $1,500 scholarship.


Don Hinton, executive director of the Mississippi High School Athletic Association, welcomed the guests to the banquet. Gaye Broyles, representing Bank Plus, and Mike Wilkinson, representing the Mississippi Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Center, presented the scholar-athletes.


Lindy Callahan, for which the award is named, gave remarks after the introduction of the scholar –athletes. Callahan, who will be 89 this year, is a native of Meridian who now resides in Gulfport. He is revered in the state as an athletic director and administrator who is in almost every Hall of Fame there is because of his accomplishments and his service.


Attending the banquet to support Kamron were his parents, Daryl and Chiqueta Daniels; his grandparents, Howard and Gussie Brown; Interim Superintendent Charles Brooks; Assistant Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Clinton Gatewood; Kamron’s tennis coach Larry Crawford; and his former high school Principal Percy Powell.
