Museum educator visits students, brings nature indoors

Submitted on: September 9, 2017

Mrs. Jackie Henne-Kerr works as an outreach educator for the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. She came to Bankston and shared her knowledge and expertise with 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students in my classroom.

Mrs. Henne-Kerr brought several animals, which are native to Mississippi, including turtles, a snake, and an alligator. She also brought many pelts, fossils, models, and activities for students to use while they participated in hands on learning, group work, and scientific investigation.

fourth graders shared their knowledge of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. They were very exited to see live animals which they could touch and investigate in an up close and personal way.

Fifth graders completed an animal identification activity. Using models of both bird and mammal skulls, they compared characteristics, discussed ecosystems, worked out energy flow patterns, and examined adaptations. Venomous and non-venomous snakes were also discussed, with hands-on experience provided by Mrs. Henne-Kerr. She brought a chicken snake to the classroom for students to meet.

Sixth graders discussed alligator habitats and characteristics. They met an alligator in class today.

The photographs show many students engaged in hands on activities, but my favorites are the pictures with grinning and engaged students who are learning science in an unique way which will stay with them as they mature and grow.
