Jaylin Smith wins oratorical contest for second consecutive year

Submitted on: January 11, 2017

Oratorical contest participants included, from left, Jaylin Smith, first place; Michael Coleman, second; Kyla Cole, third; and Jimeya Mayes, fourth.

Greenwood High School student Jaylin Smith has won first place in the Thompson-Clemmons American Legion Post #200 oratorical contest for the second consecutive year.

Jaylin, a junior, competed against three other contestants Jan. 8. Her first-place finish comes with a $300 scholarship and a trip to the district competition. Her first speech, which lasted eight minutes and 57 seconds, was entitled “The Constitution: A Past, A Present and A Future of Freedom.

GHS freshman Michael Coleman placed second in the competition and was awarded a $200 scholarship. His topic was “The Constitution: Three Claims.” Amanda Elzy High School junior Kyla Cole, whose topic was “The Efficiency of Concurrent Elasticity” (The Elastic Clause), placed third and received a $100 scholarship, and GHS sophomore Jimeya Mayes, whose topic was “Exercising My Rights,” placed fourth and received a $50 scholarship. Each participant received a lapel pin and certificate.

As part of the scoring process, each student is assigned a specific topic and is given five minutes to prepare. Participants spoke on “Amendment 7” of the Constitution, which deals with a jury trial in civil lawsuits where the value in controversy exceeds twenty dollars.

Jaylin, the daughter of Angela Smith, says winning feels good. “Certainly factors that played a part in my success were preparation, practice and a strong support system,” she said. She also believes that participating in the constitutional oratorical contest serves a two-fold purpose. “This competition gives me an opportunity to pursue my passion for speaking,” she said. “It also gives me the opportunity to learn the history of our Constitution. We don’t know enough about it, and this lets me become more educated about the place we call home.”

All the contestants except Coleman have prior experience with the contest. He said it was a learning experience for him. “I am extremely grateful for this opportunity. I put in a lot of hard work and I think it paid off,” Coleman said. ‘I plan on participating every year that I’m in school.”

The constitutional speech contest has been held by the American Legion for more than 75 years. It is designed to foster the development of a deeper understanding and appreciation on the part of high school students for the duties of citizenship under the Constitution of the United States of America. The contest includes the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently and the preparation for acceptance of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizens.
