Lora Evans selected as Mississippi’s Parent of the Year

Greenwood Public School District’s own Lora Rance Evans is the 2016 Mississippi Parent of the Year.

Mrs. Evans, a mother of two at Greenwood Middle School and a Congressional District 2 finalist, was nominated by the school district. She is actively involved with the middle school. She has served as a school board member, coordinated ACT workshops and financial aid workshops and received numerous community service awards. Evans is a founding member of the local Parents for Public Schools of Greenwood chapter, the Chamber Education Committee and Young Emerging Leaders of Leflore (YELL).

Mrs. Evans has been a liaison among the parents, faculty and staff at GMS. She is currently serving as the GMS Parent Teacher Student Organization president where she is innovative, solution-oriented, and eager to ensure that parents play their role in the school reaching its vision.

Mrs. Evans has even appeared on the nationally recognized game show, “Family Feud,” and said it was an exciting and wonderful experience for her and her family.

Interim Superintendent Charles Brooks said, “We are elated, yet not surprised, that Mrs. Evans has been selected as Mississippi’s Parent of the Year. She has been actively involved in education in our school district, both as a parent and as an advocate for all students.

As a former member of the school board, Mrs. Evans is well aware of how important it is for parents to be actively involved in their children’s education. We want to say congratulations to Mrs. Evans. The district is extremely proud of her and so should the entire community.”

"I am elated and surprised to attain this honor as Mississippi’s parent of the year.  As parents, we are our children’s first teachers and should be their advocate as well as role model for life.  Thanks to all who supported me in this endeavor. Special thanks to the GMS administrators and GPS district’s administration for allowing me to represent Greenwood.  Thanks to my children and my husband. My  one regret is that my mom is not here to see me receive this honor. She passed away in Septemberr," Mrs. Evans said.

Research has repeatedly shown that parental involvement is a critical factor determining the academic success of students.  As part of the annual Parent of the Year program, the Mississippi Department of Education asks each district to select an outstanding parent who has made a significant impact on school improvement efforts in the school district.

A committee of educators reviews numerous applications submitted by the school districts. As a result, the committee selects a Parent of the Year from each congressional district, and from those four names, the 2016 State Parent of the Year is selected.
