GHS's Kamron Daniels: A True Scholar-Athlete

Submitted on: March 24, 2016

Greenwood High School senior Kamron Daniels is a true scholar-athlete in every sense of the word. Daniels is GHS’s STAR student for the 2015-2016 school year. He chose his seventh grade teacher, Phyicia Harrington, as his STAR teacher. In addition to his academic achievements, Daniels has also been chosen as one of 16 outstanding scholar-athletes from across the state who will be recognized at a luncheon on April 28. Interim Superintendent Charles Brooks has also nominated Daniels for a $1, 000 scholarship from the Mississippi Association of Superintendents (MASS).

The Mississippi Economic Council and its M.B. Swayze Foundation sponsors the STAR program in an effort to encourage scholastic achievement among the state’s high school students.  A luncheon honoring the STAR students and STAR teachers will be held April 28 at 11 a.m. at the Jackson Convention Complex.

Daniels will also attend the 21st Mississippi High School Athletics Association (MHSAA) banquet at the Hilton Jackson Hotel on April 4 where he will join 15 other outstanding scholar-athletes from across the state who will receive the Lindy Callahan Scholar –Athlete award. Eight girls and eight boys from each of MHSAA’s eight geographical district were chosen for their academic accomplishments as well as their participating in high school athletics and extracurricular activities. Daniels represents Region 3. His counterpart is Hart Rogers of Cleveland.

Each winner will receive a $1,500 scholarship in recognition of their success in academics and participation in athletics Daniels’s counterpart, Hart Rogers of Cleveland, is the girls’ Region 3 winner. Accompanying Daniels to the luncheon on April 4 will be his parents, Darryl and Chiqueta Daniels; paternal grandparents, Dr. Leslie and Bernice Daniels; and Brooks.

Daniels come from a long line of educators.  His father is a teacher at Greenwood High School and his mother is the principal at Greenwood Middle School.  His paternal grandfather, is the former superintendent of the Greenwood school district, and his grandmother is also a retired educator. Daniels’s maternal grandfather, Howard Brown, was a longtime educator and coach in the Leflore County school system and his grandmother, Gussie Brown, also worked in the county school system before retiring.
Daniels’s academic accomplishments are numerous. He is a Superintendent’s Scholar who has been an A student since elementary school. He is the reigning Mr. Greenwood High School and is a member of the GHS marching and symphonic bands where he serves as the trumpet section leader. He is a member of the Beta Club, Student Government Association and Mu Alpha Theta math honor society. He has been a member of the Young Emerging Leaders of Leflore leadership group and has served as a page in the Mississippi House of Representatives. He was also selected as a delegate to Boys State.

Daniels has received the Greenwood Leflore County Chamber of Commerce Academic Excellence Award, the Woodmen of the World Award and the U.S. History Award.  He was also a Wendy’s Heisman State finalist, first place winner of the Junior Auxiliary scholarship and the Mississippi Blues Fest winner. He was chosen as one of three Greenwood Rotary Club Students of the Month in August 2015.

After graduation, Daniels plans to attend a four year university and major in either business, pre-law, political science, or some form of engineering.

Daniels said he is humbled by the recognition he has received. "I would be doing myself an injustice if I didnt thank the people who support me. I want to thank the members of my school district who stand behind me and keep me focused. I also want to thank my parents because without the support and guidance of these two individuals, I wouldnt be the young man I am today," he said.
