GHS receives commemorative football in honor of Kent Hull

Submitted on: January 30, 2016

Greenwood High School is proud to be the recipient of a National Football League Super Bowl commemorative football in honor of the late Kent Hull, a GHS graduate who played many years with the Buffalo Bills.

As the NFL marks the 50th Super Bowl on Feb. 7, the league is celebrating the players and coaches of the past 49 Super Bowls and their high schools and communities that have positively impacted the game. Nearly 3,000 players and head coaches, and more than 2,000 high schools are being recognized as members of the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll.

Hull, who graduated from GHS in 1979 and played for Mississippi State University from 1979 to 1982, was starting center for the Buffalo Bills during the team’s record four straight Super Bowl appearances from 1990 to 1993 (Super Bowls 25, 26, 27 and 28). He broke into professional football in 1983 with the USFL New Jersey Generals, and then began playing with the Bills in 1986 where he was a three-team Pro Bowl selection. He spent 11 years with the team and retired in 1996. Hull died in 2011 at the age of 50.

GHS head football coach Clinton Gatewood said Hull spoke with football players several times after his retirement, the last time being in 2010. “He talked about his professional career after coming from GHS and MSU. He said he was proud to be a GHS product in the late 70s,” Gatewood said. “Hull also told the players that hard work pays off and if they set their mind on reaching a goal and continue to work hard, they will be successful no matter what obstacles they face.”

Interim Superintendent Charles Brooks said the district appreciates the NFL’s recognition of GHS’s former student-athlete. “We are proud to display this commemorative football in a prominent location at GHS,” Brooks said. “I hope this recognition of one of Greenwood’s own will be an example to our students of how hard work and determination pays off.”

As part of its selection to the honor roll community, GHS will also receive an NFL character education curriculum and is eligible to apply for a grant from the NFL Foundation to help support the football program.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said football has always been about more than wins and losses. “The game teaches lessons that last a lifetime. High school football programs from coast to coast have consistently developed citizens of high character by instilling the values of football in their student athletes,” Goodell said.
